Automakers aren't just about designing cars anymore. Every once and awhile they take the time to develop a side project that strays from the typical lineup. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, it has decided to branch out into designing luxury golf carts. It's most recent design unveil brings the innovation of golf carts to a whole new level.

Unveiled at this year's British Open was the Vision Golf Cart. By calling on the help of its fans to contribute their ideas regarding what the cart should include, the Mercedes-Benz design team was able to have a little fun designing a model that is quite futuristic in appearance. The winning innovators in return, were each awarded VIP invites to the British Open Championship.

Gorden Wagener, the head of the project reported that the design follows the automaker's current "Sensual-Purity" design philosophy, while also introducing some unique Mercedes-Benz parts. For example, atop its roof sits solar panels that charge the electric cart's battery. The chart is capable of being charged manually as well.

Moving on to its interior features, the model includes a rotatable docking station for an iPhone or iPad, and a joystick control that takes the place of a conventional steering wheel. This allows for the cart to be driven from either side of the vehicle. Another one of its stand out features is the "fore" button. As you may have guessed, this provides a way to quickly warn surrounding golfers of a wild hit that sends a golf ball off course.

All and all, the Vision Golf Cart would most certainly enhance the golfing experience with its added innovation. While it is set to remain a concept for now, we certainly hope it makes its way to production in the future.
