Cafe Employee Buys Mercedes-Benz For $20

The moral of this story: sometimes dreams do come true. It might not happen often, but they do.

It all started in the cafeteria of the Pittsburgh Steelers' training grounds. Steelers' secondary coach, Ray Horton, frequented the cafe. Over time, he became friendly acquaintances with cook, Maurice Matthews.

Matthews would ask Horton to borrow his flashy red Mercedes-Benz convertible. Meaning no harm, Horton would respond, "you can't afford the gas in it."1

Time passed and similar encounters ensued. Eventually, Horton was offered an enticing position with competing team, the Arizona Cardinals. He took the job and is now serving as the team's defensive coordinator. But, before he left, he made Matthews' dream of driving his Mercedes-Benz convertible a reality...permanently. And, he did so in the most unsuspecting way.

On his last day at work, Horton went to the cafe. He asked Matthews if he could borrow all of the money in his pocket. The sum was $20, though we have reason to believe the amount is irrelevant and could easily have been 10 cents. For, out of the blue, Horton exclaimed, "sold for twenty dollars!" He, then handed over the keys of Matthew's dream ride.2

The story doesn't end there, either. The next day, Matthews drove Horton to the airport in his  new Mercedes-Benz. Horton gave him the papers at the airport drop-off, before embarking on his next life venture.

Speaking on his random act of kindness - Matthews explained to the Arizona Cardinals team blog, "It's just taking care of the guys who took care of you."3

Bid for Sheryl Crow's Topless Mercedes-Benz and Help a Good Cause

When we found out that Sheryl Crow owned a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, we weren't in the least surprised. You just know that a femme rocker who sings all she want to do is have some fun must have a gorgeous, topless set of wheels in which to tool around.

We were, however, surprised, to learn that she was planning to auction the restored '59 Mercedes-Benz. After all, a white 190 SL with whitewall tires, a removable hardtop and soft top, and new black leather-appointed seating seems like something you'd want to hang on to.

But, following the destructive tornadoes that swept through Joplin, Missouri, close to where she spent much of her childhood, Crow decided to auction her beloved Mercedes-Benz to help raise funds for necessary reconstruction efforts. "After the tornado in Joplin," Crowe explains, "I was moved to help rebuild a city so close to where I grew up in Missouri. My hope is that the auction of my 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster will bring funds to help rebuild the schools in the area."1

If you're interested in bidding for the title of Crow's stunning 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, and helping a good cause, you can attend the auction hosted by Gooding & Company in Pebble Beach California, on August 21. Though be prepared. The car is expected to fetch around $80,000...maybe more depending on how fast word spreads. All proceeds from the car will go to the Joplin Schools Recovery Fund.
